Impact of Mould Exposure on Mental and Neurological Health

Neurobiological Effects

Certain moulds produce toxic compounds known as mycotoxins. Research indicates that prolonged exposure to mycotoxins may affect the central nervous system by disrupting neurotransmitter activity and promoting neuroinflammation. These mechanisms have been associated with cognitive and emotional symptoms such as impaired concentration, memory difficulties, mood instability, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. In severe or long-term cases, individuals may experience cognitive decline that can resemble neurodegenerative conditions.
Chronic Inflammation and Brain Health
Mould exposure is known to activate immune responses that can lead to chronic inflammation. Persistent inflammation has been widely linked to mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety, and may interfere with neurogenesis (the brain’s ability to form new neural connections), which is critical for learning, emotional regulation, and recovery from stress.
Psychological Stress and Environmental Harm
Living in damp or mould-affected housing creates ongoing environmental stress. The presence of visible mould, unpleasant odours, and damage to personal belongings contributes to feelings of distress, helplessness, and loss of control. For many individuals and families, repeated exposure to poor housing conditions—combined with respiratory illness, fatigue, and financial or housing insecurity—can significantly exacerbate psychological strain.
Relevance to Vulnerable Populations
Children, young adults, and individuals already facing adversity are particularly at risk. For organisations working in education, child welfare, housing, and public health, mould exposure should be recognised not only as a physical health hazard but also as a mental health and safeguarding concern.
This is paramount for Universities, schools &  Organisations such as kindergartens and early learning centres

Our Philosophy

At Smart-Tecc, we believe in treating the issue is key, but prevention should be the first call, pre remediation. If this is not the case then the remediation can get excessive in cost and time. Once a remediation has taken place we offer a sensor and monitoring solution that you can monitor any further issues but also offer the data to prove that you have a safe property for your tenants.
